I think you understand that "best" and "easiest" might be two VERY different solutions. I sent you my thoughts on "easiest". You don't need a table router to do "easiest". You only need a supplemental router base. With such a base, you can work right down on the top edge of your rim.

Now, my friend, if you plan to do this more than once, you should absolutely keep researching your options with regard to table routers and overarm routers. If you do that, you will eventually figure out the "best" way for you.

There's lots of info via Google and Youtube. Use "router binding jig" and similar search terms. But if you only plan to do this once or twice, the big supplemental router base will be your "easiest" solution.

It can work very well for your purposes. It really will work for a "one-off" banjo rim. If you find yourself wanting to build some more banjos after that, you should probably think about a better rig. I understand the difference between best and easiest.

The reason I think I'd rather mount my router similar to how Rudy has shown is because I would be able to see the cut happening, and most of all because I understand that technique better and how it works, etc. I also don't have that right kind of bit yet for the one you proposed, as all my tools, wood, hardware, etc are funded from busking, which I thoroughly enjoy, but doesn't allow for me to afford much on short notice.

So therefore mounting it to a table IS easier for me. Lastly its also one of the oldest rabbit breeds, dating back to the 16th century. The other big option would be a lop rabbit, with 54 across the two more "samey" looking breeds, the german 35 and meissner 19 lop. Like the flemish and german giant, these are also often grouped up as their own category of breed, with 51 more holding the dwarf lop rabbit, which are most notable of being small and colorfull without relying on the possibly lethal "dwarf gene" if you know what a munchkin cat is, its pretty much the same but bunny.

Dwarf lops are significantly smaller and more colorfull, averaging between 1,4 and 2 kg. They would be to small for a variation, so they would work best as a third option for the breed, or maybe if frontier is especally generous as an extra animal thats a borderline reskin thats size adjusted with a few moddel tweaks and different color variants.

I think both options are pretty much equal and could easily exist side by side in the game if we had enough slots. In a perfect world we would get one pack with the european rabbit, one with the flemish giant AND the german giant spot, as they are pretty much the same animal but it would be cool if they had multiple zoopedia pages and the same deal in another pack with the german, meissner and dwarf lop, where we get 3 species for 1 with minimal difference besides coats, but 3 zoopedia pages.

That way we would get a nice variety of different breeds without actually sacrificing more slots, but if we stop dreaming for a sec, having either a german or a dwarf lop with a meissner color variation for the german and a german giant spot color variant for the flemish giant.

But what do you guys think? Straight is easier to use without a guide and speeds up the process. The corner of the straight plane can be placed in a cut line from a marker much easier than a skewed.

I know LV is selling their tapered plane blanks but they just are a little short for my taste. I may just order their blade to try out on a traditional single iron jack plane but would rather find a good source for a longer blade.

My experience with most of the NOS stuff is it's very similar to modern oil hardening irons i. By the way, I'm assuming you're talking about taper irons to make a bench plane or something, and not a rabbet iron with a thin tang, as making one out of a full sized iron would be a real bear.

You can find a lot of irons otherwise by searching "taper plane iron" on ebay. The English sellers will differentiate between taper plane irons for wood planes and parallel irons for infills , because they know the difference.

Most of what gets posted in the US is just flea market flip stuff and could be labeled anything. The english were still making tapered irons in volume at least up until about WWII marples was making them after that , and thus they know what such things are and they took some pride in their appearance.

They don't exactly grow on trees. However, it is definitely not necessary to have an old tapered iron in order to make a plane that functions well. For some other options, the Lie-Nielsen irons are tapered and about the right length. That would be an easy place to check.

It's also not too hard to make an iron yourself, and then you can choose whether to taper it or not. A blank like that can be tapered pretty quickly on a belt sander. A router bit has comparitively little pieces of carbide so cutting something like MDF will dull the bit much quicker than a dado set. I also feel more confident in the fence of the BT guiding the wood appropriately.

I like little dados on the router table but not big ones - BT has more power in addition to the slower wear rate of a dado set my router table has an old Ryobi R,
