This time is a reflection of the overall speed of the race rather than any individual runner splits. Additionally split times are taken for individual runners throughout each m interval. Sectional times are a good way of lining up horses who have never previously raced against one another.

They are also a useful tool for determining whether a horse has good early speed or is a noted fast finisher. Sectional times are important because each race is run at a different tempo and the split times recorded throughout provide the greatest insight into the merits of the individual performances.

If a race is run at good clip and the lead horses still manage to kick on strongly then it's fair to say that they have acquitted themselves very well. If however, a race is slowly run you can't put as much stock in the late sectionals. As a general rule, fast times don't lie.

Importantly, you can't learn too much from isolated sectionals. It's not just as simple as comparing two horses closing sectionals last m from two different races. Even if they both ran similar times for that split, one horse's performance might be full of merit whereas the other's might have been only fair.

The reason for this might be that the overall time of the first horse's race was much better due to them running much quicker sectionals throughout. In this instance it is impressive that the horse was still able to produce a slick time over the final section.

Alternatively, the other race may have been run at a very slow tempo, in which case you would expect the horse's to have a lot left in the tank for the final m. There is obviously more complexity to it than that but such an example should go someway towards demonstrating the sorts of things you should look for in sectional data.

Horses with early speed usually have their best chance on the smaller tighter tracks with shorter home straights.

Races that fit this profile are excellent opportunities to apply the early speed filter in order to see which horses are likely to race on the pace. Speed maps also indicate this but the raw time data is the most accurate information to that end.

Mid middle speed is calculated using the times recorded starting at the first sectional time recorded up until the last m. Late speed is calculated using the sectionals from the m to the finish line.

Horses that have better mid and late speed often settle back in the field and generally require more time to wind up and hit top speed. Horse with good late speed are much better suited to the big, roomy tracks that have long straights, such as Flemington and Randwick.

This will open up the list of relevant races and provide you with information such as where the horse finished, where the horse settled in the run and any other form comments related to the race.

From there you can un-tick any races that you feel aren't relevant to the upcoming race. An example of where this might be useful is if you read in one of the comments that the horse missed the start, in this instance you might choose to remove this run so that it doesn't unfairly skew the average speed figure.

The actual sectional splits can be observed by hovering your cursor over the graphs. Each graph shows each m section from the m mark to the finishing post.

These individual m sectional times can help you understand exactly what happened in the race. If a horse runs quick early sectionals it is naturally likely to run slower late sectionals. Conversely if a horse runs slow sectionals early in the race it can often have the energy left in the tank to run faster closing sectionals.

To get an idea of a fast sectional time, when Black Caviar won her second Group 1 Lightning Stakes in she posted a staggering 9.

Many of the top level horses can run sectionals similar to this throughout their race but Black Caviar could sustain this kind of speed for several m sectionals in a row. There is no right or wrong way to use the tool so have a play around with it and see what works for you.

The reason for not covering every possible TAB meeting is mainly one of logistics. Apart from the Northern Territory, any track we do not cover generally has less than 10 race meetings conducted per year and are low liquidity from a punting perspective.
